SATURDAY, August 10 Acts 20:1-16. A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink off into a deep sleep. Many years ago, there was a well-loved priest in our parish. He had served faithfully for decades and was nearing retirement. He suffered from a sleep disorder and often dozed off during worship. One Sunday he fell asleep during one of his own sermons. We all saw it coming, but there was nothing we could do. His head started to bob, and his eyes closed, and he hunched over on the pulpit and was out like a light. Talk about an awkward moment. No one knew what to do. Finally someone stood up and, in a loud voice, started the Nicene Creed. We all joined in, and our priest was suddenly roused—and he too chimed in with the Creed as though right on cue. I was never so thankful for the Nicene Creed. At the back of the church, following worship, everyone told him how much they enjoyed his sermon. And I was mindful of Saint Paul, who put Eutychus to sleep, and who also wrote that there is nothing in all creation that can separate us from God’s love. Not even sleep. From ForwardMovement.org
