SATURDAY, July 19 Matthew 26:26. While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” These words from the Last Supper are meaningful to us but must have been utterly confusing to the disciples who first heard them. Biblical prophets had historically dramatized their messages with plumb lines, fruit bowls, bad marriages, and other props, but what might bread broken and eaten indicate? The disciples were at a familiar but uncomfortable place on the spiritual journey. There was something going on that they knew had meaning, but they were at a loss to know what that meaning might be.
