SATURDAY, May 10 Exodus 25:8. And have them make me a sanctuary, so that I may dwell among them. “Phew,” I said, as the church warden unlocked the balky door of the tiny, circa-1850 stone church and waves of noxious odors rolled over us. “Bats,” he said in explanation. “They live here. We’re just visitors.” He proceeded to light incense sticks and distribute them strategically while another man opened the windows and fresh air rushed in. The church sprang to life as about twenty-five parishioners arrived bearing altar linens, candlesticks, and communion vessels, plus sandwiches, cakes, and thermoses of steaming water for tea and coffee. The scene was hardly reminiscent of the lavishly appointed sanctuary described in Exodus. But the Lord was here, and the people’s faith was alive and well. Once in the center of a thriving farming community on a well-traveled road, this stone bastion of faith now sits in the middle of a game reserve, literally bypassed by traffic and life. But not by God. The Anglicans here have joined with a nearby Methodist church, holding monthly services in each building where their ancestors have worshiped for generations and where God still dwells among the people.
