SAVANNAH DOCTOR PROVIDES SIMPLE SOLUTION TO HEALTHCARE COSTS Truly Affordable Healthcare As millions of Americans struggle to sign on to the new insurance Marketplace to try to find affordable coverage, one Savannah medical practice, Urgent Care 24/7, believes they have an alternative solution—paying for your healthcare through a low-cost monthly membership. The membership plan called “Primary Health Care Plan” is the brainchild of Dr. Jerry Williams, the founder and owner of Urgent Care 24/7. Originally created for individuals to help with the cost of their medical care, the Urgent Care 24/7 membership plans have been enhanced for an October 1 rollout into the employee benefits market. The membership plans will be offered alongside other group benefit plans such as dental, vision, and disability plans. Tracy Demarest, Vice President of Health Plans, has created the new employer-based plans and has started a marketing campaign to the Savannah broker community for distribution out to the employer market. She feels the timing couldn’t be better. “With so much confusion in healthcare and insurance right now, a simple, inexpensive solution--that actually gives you better access to care--is sure to be successful.” She may be right. Dramatic changes in our healthcare system are coming together as the Affordable Healthcare Act, President Obama’s signature legislation, takes effect. An emerging shortage of primary care physicians, added to millions of newly insured patients flooding the system, plus a smaller selection doctors on the new Marketplace plans could cause people to wait weeks to get in to see their doctor. Urgent Care 24/7 takes walk-in patients. Most are in a treatment room within minutes and out the door in less than one hour. As to the affordability, membership fees start as low as $39 per month. When a member comes into one of the five area locations, they present a membership card and pay a reasonable co-pay. Most of the cost of their care is then covered by the membership fee. Depending on the plan purchased, there may be no additional out-of pocket costs. A major medical policy is recommended for catastrophic health events. Urgent Care 24/7 believes their membership plans fill many voids in a fractured system. Many Savannians won’t be able to afford health insurance, even with government subsidies, and need an affordable alternative to access medical care. Many will choose a plan with a high deductible and will need to supplement that plan for basic primary care coverage. Still other people will be looking for a plan that provides “VIP” pass to see a doctor right away without the wait or the cost of the emergency room.
