“SAVITRI” by Sri Aurobindo (Republished edition of the 1st edition 1950-51, draft approved by Sri Aurobindo before His Death) PART ONE Book One— The Book of Beginnings Canto II THE ISSUE Explanation of the Text by the Late M. P. Pandit, a disciple of Sri Aurobindo at the Ashram published in his book entitled “THE BOOK OF BEGINNINGS” published by Dipti Publication, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, now, Puducherry. (Continued from yesterday January 20, 2015) The first canto ended on the note of Savitri’s rising up to confront Time and Fate. The question arises—confrontation on what? What has led to the conflict? The second canto, entitled THE ISSUE, presents that problem. It is, as one would guess, the issue of Destiny and the conquest of Death. Before rising and taking up the daily activities, for a while Savitri looks back with her mind and all the past comes in a stream, as it were, and passes before her vision as on a cinematographic film; all the main events, the high points come to life once again, however briefly. Awhile, withdrawn in secret fields of thought, Her mind moved in a many-imaged past That lived again and saw its end approach: What she sees is not a monotone; it is full of images one after another. The many-imaged past lives again and in doing so it sees also its end approach.
