SCAM ALERT Friends, we have been receiving several complaints about various scams going on around the county. One scam is from a caller claiming to be from Ohio Edison and that they are going to shut off your electric unless you purchase a pre-paid debit card and pay your bill over the phone with it. Ohio Edison will never call any of their customers with regards to shutting off service and demanding payment over the phone in this manner. We also are investigating a Publishers Clearing House scam where residents receive what they believe is a winning check, they are asked to deposit the check and then send a specific amount of the money back to the Claim Manager in cash placed in the inside of a magazine. As you may guess the check is fraudulent and will be returned non-sufficient funds from the bank. Never ever let anyone in your home or leave them unattended. We get distraction burglary calls where 2-3 people will come to your home, one of them will distract you for some reason while the others enter your home and take whatever they can find and then they leave. Friends if you receive calls, mail, or anyone knocking on your door and you suspect that there is the slightest possibility that something does not seem right, you are probably correct that it is a scam. Please before you fall victim to these unscrupulous scam artists contact the Sheriffs Office or your local law enforcement agency. Also lets make sure we watch over our parents, grand-parents, and older members of our community so that we can protect them the best we can. Neighbors watching out for neighbors will be a big help in preventing some of these scams. If you see something that does not seem right check on your neighbor or call us as it is taking place. These crimes are very, very, difficult to investigate and prosecute. Have a Great day!
