SCARED FOR MY LIFE: In 1995 my Grandmother Nabirye Edisa died of cancer, throughout the time she lived cancer she received a fairly good medical care compared to other cancer patients. As a boy that time who only cared about seeing my grandmother get back to her feet, I did not know that cancer was that serious and as I grew up I started forgetting what killed my grandmother. Until recently like 2 years ago when I got involved in the community work that I started working with Hospice(Jinja and Tororo) that all the memories of what my grandmother went through were resurrected. I have seen almost all types of cancer, I have seen how dirty it can, how deadly it can be. I have learnt that cancer is everyone’s visitor at any time regardless of which form it visits you. We are all vulnerable to getting cancer, everyone has lost someone because of cancer. The ugliest thing is that in Uganda to be diagnosed or screened, one has to only go to Mulago which makes it hard for the people to screen and also diagnose cancer at an early stage which worsens the situation. I remember when I was filming a documentary with Hospice a number of patients who needed to carry out biopsy looked helplessly because they could not even afford transport and to Mulago. Michaela Vel you remember that woman in Tororo who needed only transport to Mulago but died a few days before got the money? Last year alone, Hospice Jinja recorded over 175 people who passed on because of cancer, I have not talked to Rinty Kintu Plukkel to know how many did Hospice Tororo recorded. And my question is always why we are not having cancer centers at least at all the regional hospitals. If we had this service say at Jinja Hospital maybe the number of deaths would be low. What can we do to change this? As I write this am also scared what will happen to me when I fall a victim. And am sure even you who is reading this you’re equally scared what would happen to you when you fall a victim. My question is what is my commitment? What is your commitment? By Steven Ndhote
