SCENT OF ATTRACTION My wife and I just left the house to the market to purchase some of the things we needed to cook. Getting to the market,I parked the car at the only available space. But opposite me is a tailor shop,constituting a nuisance with his music.he brought the speaker of the deck,hung on the hinges of the main entrance of the shop. At first I thought of walking down and talk him out of this errant nonsense but something in me felt I should let him be,probably that could be his own way of celebrating the season. As u sat back in my car,with a book in hand,I remembered how I too childishly do such. One thing that came to mind as that when most of us us we young we were fond of louding music as a way of proving to other people our superiority in the genres of music in town. Another reason was to attract other guys. Sincerely,is that not what we do in church these days? We have programs,structures,and instruments which we have used to substitute the presence of the Jesus in our worship service. The best those things can help attract are people and not the presence of God. Churches that fall into this category may be experiencing numerical explosion and that doesnt stand as a measure of church growth. Gods presence is more important than any other facade we may put up. Have you ever wondered why people still swim in their sins inspite of the fact that they come out for altar calls,weep during worship section and role on the floor? We still have many hungry souls in the church but we are offering them are not satisfying enough.when Gods presence becomes a priority the thirst in peoples souls will be quenched. Our routine religious services lack the spiritual power to Change the lives of the people. We must keep asking ourselves,whose presence do we really want to attract?God or people? The answer we give to this question will determine our priorities. Jesus must be our preeminent attraction. We can promote our church programs with precision and all other marketing skills but it is when lets say,a blind is made to see,the dead is raised back to life that people really get attracted to the church. Jesus said,if I be lifted up I will draw men into me. We are to permeate our environment with the scents of Gods grace through our good works and that is what really attract people to God and respond to his saving grace.
