SEE “CHEF GET FREE DRINK WITH CUBANO SANDWICH AT CARMENS Movie Shows Love for Cuban Sandwich and Life TROY, N.Y. (7/1/14) -- A Cuban restaurant in Troy wants moviegoers to taste what they see on screen. Starting this Saturday, July 5, anyone who brings in a movie ticket stub from Chef, will receive a complimentary beverage when they order a Cubano sandwich at Carmens Café in Troy. The motion picture, which hit theaters in May, is still showing this week in area theaters, however, those who kept their stubs from earlier screenings can still take advantage of the deal. In the movie, Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) quits his job at a major Los Angeles restaurant after its owner (Dustin Hoffman) pushes him too far. Next, in Miami, he partners up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck specializing in Cuban sandwiches. Along the way, he regains his zest for life and making good food. Even I left the movie craving a Cubano sandwich, and we serve them every day, said Carmen Gonzalez, co-owner of Carmens Cafe. Its a wonderful, heartwarming movie that everyone should hurry up and go see. Earlier this year, Carmens announced extended hours, a new menu -- featuring farm fresh products -- and free delivery in downtown Troy. On their list of new products is authentic Cuban bread, baked specially for Carmens by Papitos Cuban Bakery in Teaneck, N.J. and shipped fresh overnight. Authentic Cuban bread is a key ingredient in Cubano sandwiches. Authentic Cuban bread looks a little like a golden brown ciabatta, but with a soft crust. Its used to make Cubano sandwiches. Its airy and flavorful, with a unique taste and texture, Gonzalez said. When you combine pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard, then put that on a grill and press it to make a Cubano sandwich, it comes together in a way thats just mouth watering. While Cubanos are prepared specifically with Cuban bread, other sandwiches at Carmens come with a choice of Portuguese rolls, rye and pumpernickel, multigrain and artisan breads and rolls. HOURS & LOCATION Carmens Cafe is located at 198 First Street in Troy. Hours* are: Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. * Carmens Cafe is closed this week for summer vacation. The restaurant reopens this Saturday, July 5. ABOUT CARMENS CAFE Carmen Gonzalez, a native of Manhattan, opened the Cuban-American cafe on the border of South Troy in 2004. Carmens is both a neighborhood-gathering place and a destination restaurant that draws visitors from afar. The daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and Cuban father, Carmen’s menu is inspired by family recipes that are prepared by Rising Star Chef Chris Faraci. When people say Hispanic, they tend to blend in a whole population that’s Spanish- speaking. They dont understand that Mexicans, Jamaicans, Peruvians, Chileans all have their own delicious foods, and they are all different, Gonzalez said. We use spices in a different way. Cuban food is about a blending of flavors. For an article in Eater about Chef and the Cubano, see: Loved the Movie Chef?
