SELF-DEFENSE. Sunday, October 12 “Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity, Who sharpen their tongue like a sword, And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words” Psalm 64:2-3 Racial tension remains one of the flashpoints in America till today. Nothing points this so clearly like the shooting of a black boy, Michael Brown by a white Officer, Darren Wilson on August 9. The aftermath of that was the series of violent protest in Ferguson, Missouri. While majority of people believed that the shooting was unprovoked, a few held the opinion that the Officer acted in self-defense. The fate of the Officer will be decided by a grand jury whether he would be indicted. In most countries shooting is acceptable if it is duly done in self-defense. There is another kind of setting where silence is actually the profitable form of self-defense. In a number of places the Scriptures show that the “shooting” of the tongue is actually to the destruction of the user. Our lead Scripture likens the tongue to a sword and bitter words to bows and arrows. It is in the keeping of the mouth from bitter, faithless words that a life is preserved.
