SENATOR HUKILL’S BILL TO PROMOTE POETRY IN STATE PASSES THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TALLAHASSEE – Senator Dorothy L. Hukill (R-Port Orange), passed Senate Bill 290/House Bill 513 with unanimous support in the Senate today. The legislation officially creates the position and process for the nomination, selection and duties of the Florida State Poet Laureate. Senator Hukill read a poem that was created especially for today by a local poet, Dr. David Axelrod of Daytona Beach, FL. The House Bill Sponsor, Representative Dan Raulerson joined Senator Hukill on the Senate Floor in support of its passage. Florida’s Poet Laureate is a volunteer who will promote reading, writing and the appreciation of poetry throughout the state and encourage students to express themselves through poetry and reading out loud. “Poetry is a creative outlet that allows students to improve their public speaking skills, strengthen their vocabulary, and develop their communication skills,” said Hukill. Across the State of Florida, schools, libraries, clubs, and organizations recognize the importance of poetry, and meet periodically to share poetry with one another. Opportunities are provided for children to enter their poems into competitions, including the Poetry Out Loud Competition hosted by the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, which sends a finalist to compete against students across the U.S. in a national competition. The State of Florida believes educational and creative outlets are pivotal to a child’s development, which is why this bill has passed the Florida Legislature with unanimous support. “The State Poet Laureate is an important role and as we visit schools and communities we see students who have discovered a passion for poetry and a love for literacy,” said Hukill. “I want to thank all the local poets from around the state for all their input and support on this good legislation.” The bill now heads to the Governor for his approval.
