SHAPING: Shaping is the process of reinforcing successive - TopicsExpress

SHAPING: Shaping is the process of reinforcing successive approximations while withholding reinforcement for earlier approximations so those approximations cease and are replaced by more full approximations of the goal behavior. It is helpful when teaching complex behaviors or behaviors that are not easy to capture because they occur infrequently. Here is Skinner, an early behaviorist shaping a pigeon to turn counterclockwise.Next week my basic training class will be learning this basic skill by teaching their dogs to go to a mat and lie down. ~Cindy Ludwig, Canine Connection LLC
