SHOOTING IN PARADISE ILLUSTRATES DANGERS OF POLICE WORK, CHICO ER EDITORIAL PLUS MY COMMENT Recently I commented on those New York police officers who showed disrespect to and turned their backs on New York Citys Mayor de Blasio. I said that they should be fired. Having said that I agree with this editorial in Sundays Chico ER about the Butte County sheriff deputy who unfortunately had to shoot the Paradise man who stabbed him. From the editorial: We often hear, particularly on the many “suicide by cop” incidents that are all too frequent among those with mental illness, that the victim should have been shot in the leg, or hit with a Taser, or that officers should just walk away and leave the troubled person alone. If only things were that simple. Officers go through intense training focusing on their split-second, life-and-death decisions. Granted, they don’t make the right choices 100 percent of the time, as we see from some incidents in the national spotlight, but they do a vast majority of the time. If people are going to remember the aberrations, like the Eric Garner case, they need to remember the justifiable outcomes like the one Monday in Paradise. What is unfortunate is that we dont have much in the way of mental institutions to place the mentally ill who are a danger to themselves and the rest of society. When I was very young, that is how it was. To read in full, CLICK HERE chicoer/opinion/20150103/editorial-shooting-in-paradise-illustrates-dangers-of-police-work
