SHOULD EMERGENCY RULE BE EXTENDED IN THE 3 NORTHEASTERN STATES OF ADAMAWA, BORNO AND YOBE? In my humble opinion, the answer is yes. However, some moderation should be done to the terms of the state of emergency as it currently stands. Those opposed to the extension may just be playing politics with the situation. Here are some of suggestions on the moderation to be effected: • The situation is still worrisome and the presence of military in all the affected areas is still very necessary; • However, because of the peculiar nature of the emergency rule declared where political authority still rests with the state governors, there must be harmony in activities between Military High Command and the governors in the affected states. State governments must not be acting or seen to be acting at cross purposes with military and security services. That is why the recently set-up Joint Information in the crisis area is a welcome development. Representative of the state government should be welcome there; • State Security Council Chairmanship should be taken over from state governors in the period of emergency rule. This will avoid a situation of buck-passing and blame trading as we are experiencing in the Chibok Abduction Saga; • It is embarrassing and not acceptable that schools being highly vulnerable targets are left unprotected even under emergency rule. Such obvious anomalies must be addressed this time around • Surveillance helicopters should constantly be deployed and military fighter jets placed at a whistle distance away from any part of the states in the event of attacks or attempted attacks such jets will be immediately deployed. It is disturbing that these insurgents carry out attacks unchallenged and also escape with ease. #NIGERIA WILL OVERCOME!!!!
