SINT MAARTEN, Pond Island – An early morning accident in the Simpson Bay area Tuesday, left a TelEm Group telephone cabinet totally damaged interrupting landline and internet services to the area. The damage was reported by a concerned member of the public who spotted the damaged cabinet at the entrance to Pelican early Tuesday morning. The result of the damage is that a number of residential and business customers in the area from the Simpson Bay Bridge to the Simpson Bay Yacht Club are without landline and internet service from TelEm Group. According to TelEm Group, Manager, Outside Plant, Mr. Marco London, due to the dry weather and the manner in which the cabinet was damaged, not all the customer lines in the area are down, nevertheless customers are being informed in a general public message. He said a number of customers will be unable to make and receive calls or have internet service until repairs are carried out. Customers are therefore being encouraged to make use of their mobile phones to maintain communication links if their landline is down. TelEm Group technicians have assessed the damage and have already started carrying out repairs. They estimate it could take up to three days to fully restore the service and reconnect all customers who have lost service. TelEm Group management has meantime apologized to customers in the Simpson Bay area for the interruption in service and say they have reported the matter of the collision to police for further investigation.
