SKELEMANI CALL FOR DELIVERY BY CHINESE CONTRACTORS Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Phandu Skelemani has appealed to the new Chinese Ambassador to Botswana to closely monitor the performance of the Chinese contractors operating here. Speaking at a welcome reception for the new Ambassador on Wednesday, H.E. Zheng Zhuqiang, Minister Skelemani said the relationship between Botswana and China date from 1975 and need to be nurtured for the future generations of the two countries. The Minister observed that of late there had, however, been uproar of dissatisfaction from members of the public regarding projects carried out by some Chinese contractors, which were said to be below acceptable standards. He further observed from personal experience that he knew the Chinese people to be hard working and industrious with the capacity and knowledge to hand over proper structures. He therefore urged them to maintain such standards. He noted that Government had a responsibility to account for every thebe that it spends and if the Chinese contractors win tenders, they should hand in good projects, which would please Batswana. On other issues, Minister Skelemani acknowledged that China remains a strategic partner for Botswana and that relations between the two countries remain excellent as reflected in the volume of development assistance that Botswana has been receiving from China over the years. He further noted that amongst such development assistance are grants, concessional loans, scholarships, short term training and infrastructural development such as the RMB Yuan 80 million, which will be utilized for phase II of the Gaborone Multipurpose Youth Centre.
