SL School Board #4 - Rosemary Emery - I just spoke with Rosemary. She was very kind. Unlike the other candidates that I spoke with, she wanted to know my stance before she told me her stance. She is originally from New York and is a retired math teacher (of 34 years). She is a believer in Common Core. She said since the school board level doesnt have the authority to override the State standards, their hands are really tied, so it wouldnt matter if she favored or didnt favor CC. Since the State CC standards are somewhat vague, she acknowledged that the school board does have the job of selecting the curriculum, but if they chose non-CC curriculum that may still meet the State standards, the kids would have a difficult time performing on the SAGE exams. Overall, she was delight to speak with and gave me some food for thought as well. But, is not in favor of doing away with CC. Oh... and I didnt get the feeling she would budge or was willing to entertain compromising CC. So... for me, I dont believe she is a good candidate because I dont believe in CC.
