SLC- VP drops bombshell FRIDAY, 06 SEPTEMBER 2013 12:56 E-mail Print Sri Lanka Cricket Vice President K. Mathiavanan resigned from his post in a shock move, that could create ripples in the cricketing fraternity after he was compelled to withdraw from a contest with SLC Secretary Nishantha Ranathungafor the Presidency of leading Cricket Club- Colts today. Speaking to the Daily Mirror Mathiavanan said that unwarranted pressure and interference in the run up to the Colts CC elections had compelled him to resign. “There was political interference in the run up and I resign heartbroken. There were powers that were beyond me which compelled me to take this decision”. He further said that he couldn’t stand up to powerful elements that control cricket administration “There is a mafia in operation which is running Cricket. Even cricketers have been targeted now. I want to keep my integrity and reputation intact therefore I took this decision to stay away from all forms of cricket” Ranathunga therefore is to be appointed President of the Colts Cricket Club (CCC) uncontested, this evening after Mathiavanan who has been the President of the Club for 12 years, withdrew from the race. In his letter of resignation tendered to SLC President JayanthaDarmadasa, Mathivanan said that “Circumstances that are prevailing, does not permit my conscience to continue to be in this role anymore”. He was elected as Vice President of the SLC with the highest number of votes at the Annual General Meeting held earlier this year. Mathiavanan was viewed as a major benefactor of the game and is credited for providing financial and other incentives in the forms of jobs for rural cricketers. During the years as his tenure as the Chairman for 12 years he is credited to have spent his personal funds running into several millions for the development of the club. Mathiavanan notably distanced himself for the controversial Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) and had minimal involvement in the SLC administration since of late hardly attending the Ex- Co meetings. Mathiavanan a former first class cricketer of Saracens sports club and the CCC is presently the Chairman of East West Marketing a leading commercial firm in the country. He is widely known within the cricketing circles as an honest and straight forward individual who had maintained his integrity throughout his career as an administrator. SLC President JayanthaDarmadasa said that he had accepted the resignation of his Vice President. “ I told him to reconsider his decision but he told me that he has taken a firm decision so I was compelled to accept it” he said.(Hafeel Farisz)
