SML Seminar Series - 10th October 2013 Valerie Pellatt (SML): Chinese Cultural Revolution Postage Stamps SML Research Seminar Series Location: *New room* Percy Building G13 Time/Date: 10th October 2013, 16:00 - 17:00 Chinese stamps of the twentieth century provide a remarkable pictorial record of the recent history of China. During a period when China was poor, they played multiple roles: first and foremost as educational and propaganda tools, as a means of artistic expression, as an affordable hobby in a society that offered little scope for possessions or collections, and as advertising to China’s overseas trade partners and allies. In this collection of stamps, gifted to The Scotland-China Association in the 1980s, we see a representation of cultural and ideological trends throughout the greater part of the century, and a treasure trove of visual art. ncl.ac.uk/sml/about/seminars/item/Chinese-Stamps
