SO, I finally watched the NOAH movie starring Russell Crowe so I could evaluate it for myself. I am going to evaluate it from two different perspectives. First, for an epic movie with A-list actors and a monstrous budget it was only just fair. Ive seen plenty worse and many better. I was most disappointed in the character development - or lack of it. Even without the biblical story hovering in the background (more on that in the second perspective) I found myself wanting to root for Noah but couldnt because he was, quite frankly, a nut-job. I understand the desire to show the struggles that all of us face and how real people - even our heroes - struggle and vacillate between listening to and acting upon the darker elements of our nature and rising to the occasion with legitimate acts of courage, heroism, and inspiring leadership. But this tinseltown version of the man Noah just wasnt cutting it. Quite honestly, this movie felt like a first installment for a knock-off Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now, the second perspective is in light of the biblical account which honestly in this movie felt more like the unmentioned elephant in the room than the framework for the screenplay. The major similarities between the biblical account and the movie are the names of Noah and his sons, a flood and a boat. Beyond that this may have well been the re-telling of any of the other ancient flood narratives - just not the Jewish one. And the not-so-subtle inclusion of the gospel of environmentalism throughout the story while not unexpected from the Hollywood crowd was never-the-less a sly co-opting of the true message behind the biblical story. So, the verdict. Just for something do to on a boring Friday night, probably worth $1.20 on Redbox. I would strongly recommend reading the biblical account in Genesis either prior to or after viewing and be prepared if your kids are like mine for lots of questions! I would have definitely regretted paying the $9.00 at the theater, however. Thats my two cents.
