SO what I DID do last night was to run a game of D&D 5th edition. Here are some notes: 1. The box starter set is not complete. You need to use the web based starter PDF as well in order to get all of the relevant rules. 2. They have simplified a lot of mechanics from the 3.5 days. They have also eliminated most of what I didnt like about 4th edition. Spontaneous character healing is still a thing, but I could kind of overlook it. 3. The box set comes with five characters. The included adventure is designed for five characters. Four characters along with a DM dice hot streak nearly TPKd the party. All in all, it was a good session. It seems to emphasize role play over roll play (even including mechanics which reward players for doing so), simplified some very over-complicated things, and was a nice immersion back into the D&D world. The players want to continue the adventure as opportunities arise. Conclusion? Ill be buying the base books.
