SOUND OFF! Corporate PetSmart in Lawrence, KS: What does that mean for locally owned Pet World? You tell us. Since 1988 weve seen pet stores come and go - some competitive, some not so much. PetCo immediately claimed a good percentage of the local pet trade when they opened. We took the hit and survived because we were operating with much less overhead. Back then we only had 12 employees - now we employ nearly three dozen people. We worry about their jobs. Back then we could afford to not pay ourselves for several months because we had no debt or children - now we have kids, a mortgage, etc. Back then we were helping a few public classrooms - now were district level partners, helping ALL Lawrence public schools. We now have third generation customers who depend on Pet World like family, whose families would truly miss us if we were gone. The stakes are so much higher now. This is serious. There are only so many pet dollars spent in Lawrence and PetSmart has every intention of claiming a large share. Its been our privilege to serve you and your pets for 26 years.
