SOUTHERN DISTRICT COUNCIL CLOSES NIGHT CLUB Topo Monngakgotla for BOPA The Southern District Council (SDC) authorities have slapped the Ark night club in Kanye with a three months ban, beginning July this year. Speaking in an interview, Kanye police station commander, Supt Kealositse Konyana said the closure came as a recommendation from his office. He said he was concerned that the club had become a haven for criminals hence his recommendation for the closure. Among other incidents, he explained that a young man lost his life a day after he was stabbed with a sharp object at the club. Supt Konyana further revealed that about 20 revellers lost their cell phones and money to armed robbers who had recently besieged the club wielding knives, adding that the club also used to operate outside stipulated hours. Mr Konyana further said the club did not have prerequisite amenities like sound proof, security personnel or a proper fence which prompted the council bye-law office to impose the penalty. Meanwhile, Supt Konyana expressed relief that incidents such as theft, rape and common nuisance had dramatically come down in his policing area since the closure of the drinking hole. If it meets all the compliance criteria, he said the club would be re-opened in September, after a thorough inspection. The SDC public relations officer, Thapelo Timuno also confirmed the closure. He said SDC had suspended the renewal of the tenant’s licence pending the installation of sound proof, security fence and engagement of security personnel. He said the toilets should also be labelled male and female. He said the ban would only be lifted upon compliance with night club regulations.
