SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - A new home in Spokane Valley is giving teenage mothers a place to call home. The GraceSon House opened in mid-November with space for 3 teenage mothers and their children. The GraceSon Foundation gives girls food, diapers and resources in addition to a roof over their head. Executive Director Holly Haneke says girls come to them from dire situations and often bounce from one house to another every night with their young children. Rosa Branton and her 4 month old son, Cayden, moved into GraceSon House last week on her 18th birthday. Her parents kicked her out when she gave birth to Cayden and they were asked to leave her boyfriends basement bedroom when she turned 18 last week. She says shes excited to have access to a fully stocked kitchen. During her time in her boyfriends bedroom, Haneke says Rosa was hospitalized 3 times for malnutrition because she was confined to the basement. Rosas life at GraceSon House is far different now. The GraceSon Foundation assists a population that no other organization serves. It focuses on teenage mothers between 13 and 18 years old. While there is another shelter for young moms, GraceSon House is the only home that serves moms between 13 and 15 years old. They also assist teen mothers with more than 1 child, making it the only shelter of its kind in the Spokane area. GraceSon and its sister organization, Young Lives, serve well over a hundred teen moms in the Spokane area with mentoring and resources.
