SRINAGAR – A shutdown was observed in Kashmir to protest the killing of two unarmed civilians at Chattergam area of Budgam district Monday evening. The call for the shutdown was given by various separatist groups. Life remained affected in Srinagar city and other major towns of Kashmir as education and businesses remained halted. The authorities imposed curfew like restrictions in several areas of Srinagar falling under police stations Khanyar, Nowhatta, Mahraj Gunj, Rainawari, Safakadal and Nowgam. Normal life remained completely disrupted in curfew bound areas. Eyewitnesses said that the police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men, armed with anti-riot gear, were deployed in strength across Srinagar and other sensitive areas of other districts. Reports however said that most of the shops opened up in certain parts of uptown city while private transport plied smoothly on roads. Reports said that in most of the district headquarters some shops opened up and private transport plied on the roads. In Kulgam, agitated youth were demanded stern punishment to Army soldiers involved in Budgam killing incident. Reports said that youth pelted stones at the police and CRPF personnel who did not retaliate. Sources said that at least three persons were injured during the clashes in Kulgam. According to reports partial shutdown was observed in South Kashmir’s Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian districts while in North Kashmir life in Handwara town was normal, however shutdown was observed in Sopore and Baramulla. In Ganderbal and Kangan, shops and other business centres remained open and transport was on the roads. A police official said that situation remained peaceful all across Kashmir and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the Valley. KASHMIR NEWS SERVICE
