SSS DUBIOUS MANDATE. D SSS created in 1986 by IBB had d National Security Org (NSO) as its precursor. Its mandate is to protect 1. D Pres 2. Govs 3. Certain Class of Public officials. With such a mandate, it is within their powers and schedule to invite Mal Nasir El Rufai for making perceived threatening statement against d incumbent regime. It matters not that d statement was a conditional one. Ironically, threats such as d one attributed to MA DOKUBO to visit violence on d country, if Pres GEJ is not returned in 2015 exposes d contradictions and limitations of d mandate. MADs statement was not directed towards d 3 sets of officials that d SSS are charged to protect. It was aimed at d Nigerian Nation and opponents of GEJ. That, to me is where d problem lies. Protection of national interest ought to form d main thrust of d SSS machinery, rather than d Execs and select public officials across d 3 tiers of govt. Similar bodies in other parts of d globe would have invited Mr Pres over these statements credited to him : 1. IT IS NOT MEND I KNOW WHO DID IT. 2. I HAVE BH IN MY GOVT, D MILITARY AND IN D LEGISLATURE. Similarly d Yakassais and Clarkes of d world ought not to b spared. Ditto with all those threatening for power shift to Arewa or else.... Did d SSS even contemplate doing that ? I dont think so. Same treatment ought to b extended to state govs and d 3rd category of officials. It is time d org displayed a better outlined covert operations method. They should not b heard or seen. They ,equally dont need a PRO to expose their plans or accomplishments, in d name of instilling public confidence. It is time NASS reviewed d Acts estab d SSS with a view to reprofessionalise it org for enhanced productivity and performance. Its mandate needs an outright overhaul. D SSS must b given enabling laws where National Interest is placed above every other consideration.
