#SSU #SPORTSUPDATE In-form West Ham United are just about the last team Manchester United would want to face on Saturday as Louis van Gaals side seek an immediate response to their Premier League collapse at Leicester City. West Ham, who have lost on their last six league visits to Old Trafford, thumped Liverpool 3-1 on Saturday the day before United twice lost two-goal leads and slumped to a 5-3 defeat at Leicester which left them 12th with one win from five matches. That loss left United eight points behind leaders Chelsea, who face unlikely third-placed occupants Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, while Southampton, the early season surprise packages in second place, face struggling Queens Park Rangers. The first Merseyside and north London derbies of the season also take place with Liverpool playing Everton at Anfield and Arsenal taking on Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates. Liverpool drew 2-2 with Championship (second tier)Middlesbrough in the Capital One (League Cup) before going through 14-13 after a marathon penalty shootout while Everton were knocked out 3-0 at Swansea City. Arsenal were also eliminated when they lost 2-1 at home to Southampton while Spurs came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-1. ------------ Bafana Bafana will train at Platinum Stars Royal Bafokeng Sports Complex in Rustenburg, North West, for their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville, said coach Shakes Mashaba. South Africa take on Congo in Pointe-Noir on October 11 before returning to South Africa for the return fixture in Polokwane four days later. Mashaba said the fact Bafana would be playing on an artificial pitch in Congo prompted management staff to choose Rustenburg for their camp prior to departing on a charted flight to West Africa. ------------- The finalists for the TN Mobile 9th African Women Championship Namibia 2014 are nearing the home stretch in their preparations with barely three weeks to the opening match. Hosts Namibia are in Group A with six-time winners, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Zambia while Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana and South Africa constitute Group B for the 11-25 October 2014 tournament. The three top finishers at the tournament will represent the continent at the 2015 Fifa women’s World Cup in Canada. The Algerians are in the fourth phase of preparations for the tournament where 25 players are in camp at the National Technical Centre in Sidi-Moussa under the technical guidance of coach Azzedine Chih. ---------- The security chief for the National Football League said on Thursday he never received the video of former Baltimore Ravens star Ray Rice punching his fiancée, after a news report said it had been sent directly to him in April. I unequivocally deny that I received at any time a copy of the video and I had not watched it until it was made public on September 8, Jeffrey Miller said in a statement. Miller was responding to an Associated Press report on Thursday quoting an unnamed law enforcement source who said the video had been addressed to Miller. Two weeks ago, that same source had said he sent the package to the NFL, but did not allow the AP to report who he addressed it to. The report could complicate matters for the NFL as it struggles to regain its credibility for its handling of the Rice case and four other domestic abuse incidents, amounting to one of the biggest scandals in Americas most-popular sports league. ------------ Michael Phelps could win two or three individual gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and again return home as Americas top swimmer, former U.S. swimming great John Naber believes. Already the most decorated Olympian of all-time with 18 gold medals, Phelps return to competition after a two-year retirement was greeted with apprehension and skepticism but the tide has quickly turned. While no one expects Phelps to come close to his eight gold medal haul at the 2008 Beijing Games or the six he swept four years earlier in Athens, Naber believes he could match or even better his haul from London where he stood atop the podium four times.
