STATEMENT ON PUPPET: I HAVE NO INTENTION OF INSULTING WAN AZIZAH – KHAIRY KAJANG, (March 15) — Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said he had no intention of insulting anyone when using the word ‘puppet’ in describing Parti Keadilan Nasional (PKR) candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. The Youth and Sports Minister said his statement on Monday did not mean to be negative but more towards describing the PKR president as only a last minute candidate after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim became ineligible to contest. “I want to stress here I have no intention of insulting (Dr Wan Azizah), I only said she was a last minute replacement to Anwar Ibrahim…and it is true, that was what I said, not to insult (anyone),” he said when met by reporters after a programme at Sungai Jelok here, Saturday. He was commenting on a news portal report which quoted his speech when launching the BN Youth machinery for the Kajang by-election on Monday that, among others, mentioned Wan Azizah as only a puppet in Anwar’s plan to become Menteri Besar of Selangor. However, Khairy’s statement was often repeated in a series of ceramah by opposition leaders, to give the impression that the Umno Youth chief did not know how to respect Wan Azizah, an older leader. In the same development, Khairy said the BN Youth machinery was implementing numerous programmes to woo the support of 14,000 young voters from the overall 39,278 voters in Kajang on March 23. The by-election in Kajang would see BN candidate Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun opposed by Dr Wan Azizah of PKR. — BERNAMA
