STATEMENT OVER REVEREND DR. LAZARUS CHAKWERA’S REMARKS AGAINST HER EXCELLENCY DR. JOYCE BANDA; AND HER GOVERNMENT BY CONCERNED CITIZENS We as apolitical Malawians of goodwill have every reason to feel annoyed by the rude, and honestly, sad, remarks made against Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda by Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, MCPs presidential candidate in the impending 20 May 2014 tripartite elections, on his return from United States of America where he went to fundraise for his party’s campaign in American Churches. Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera alongside his militant Publicist, Jessie Kabwila Kapasula and like all erratic politicians, called Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda and her government that they are childish in the manner they handle government business. Such words coming from a man who for a great part of his working career was spent as a man of God are unfortunate. And By conducting himself in this manner, Reverend Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is basically surrendering his badly battered and questionable morals to the ridicule of primitive politics. Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has therefore boxed himself into a corner for the President’s visit to Mazengera last Sunday clearly confirmed that the magic wand to win the forthcoming tripartite elections is with Malawi’s First Woman President, Dr. Joyce Banda. It is obvious that the multitude that thronged the development rally; where Honorable Sosten Gwengwe, was launched; as the President’s running mate in the forthcoming tripartite elections was there to acknowledge the good job the president is doing in this country and to show the MCP stalwarts that the MCP and its leadership has no place in modern politics. Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s recent irresponsible utterances constitute grave offenses not only to the person and dignity of the President and the office she occupies, but a slur to all Malawians and all other decent human beings. Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s deeply offensive and extreme act of agitation to the vast majority of Malawians was made vile by his labeling of the Peoples Party as a collection of Mafiosos. To good mannered Malawians Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera simply crossed the line. As responsible Malawians we equally condemn all those who defend this aggressive conduct and tongue-lashing of a man who has lost his bearings and has decided to go flat out to drag in the mud the decent character of those he has failed to beat on the political podium claiming that he is expressing his freedom. But Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera should be told by possibly his unquestioning companions, Messrs.’ Felix Jumbe and Njovuyalema that freedom of expression does not mean to abuse and harm the pride of another person especially a genuine philanthropist of Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda’s caliber. This kind of protection is a further humiliation of Malawians who fought for multiparty democracy in 1992, with some sacrificing their own lives to the unpopular crocodiles of the MCP era. We wish to state it downright that we did not fight for our freedom so that it can be abused by misinformed politicians and all other bigots in the name of freedom of expression and political pandering. Dr. Joyce Banda’s principled commitment to building a Malawi where people can live happily together and respectfully must never be taken for a sign of weakness. It seems as if the generosity of millions of Malawians is being taken for granted by elements that do not care a bit about the future of Mother Malawi. As a country we have come a long way to shape collective consistency, peace and stability in our country. Such wild and uncaring politicking is basically disruptive and runs the risk of ruining a lot of what we have done since 1992. Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda will not be sidetracked by these kicks of a dying horse but move forward with her remarkable agenda of transforming the lives of all Malawians to prosperity. As a human rights activist Dr. Joyce Banda will never stop to defend the freedom of dialogue and free political expression Malawians are enjoying now but Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s utterances are simply not part of such. Political freedom and expression has to safeguard the dignity of individuals and nothing is more inviolable than self-respect of individuals. Through this Statement we join the call by other decent Malawians that Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and his followers should immediately stop making such insensitive remarks and apologize for his recklessness and he should also take the time to teach his militant and uncultured publicist, Jessie Kapasula Kabwila some basic manners in the way we talk about the State President and matters of Government.
