STATISTICS - Statistics an amazing tool that can be used to reveal truths about all aspects of life that was impossible to do before. For example, psychologists have found answers to the real meaning behind common facts. Heres an example: On a scale of 1-5, how much do you like art? A series of similar questions is asked to see how much a person truly likes art and considers themselves artistic. It was found that one big commonality amongst artists was that they were sensitive people. (Now we know that most artists have one thing in common, that they are sensitive.) So, psychologists are using statistics to find hidden secrets amongst common things. These statistics are used to create a highly complex survey that is statistically valid. These surveys usually cost millions of dollars to make and involves many years of hard work surveying hundreds of thousands of people. Then, the test taker takes the test answering strange questions such as: How often do you contradict people? (This is usually asked in a statement form I contradict people and you have to agree, disagree, or stay neutral about the question. Then, after you take the test, they pop in the answers to a complex statistical calculator called SPSS and bingo! It tells you everything about yourself. You now know for a scientific fact that you are (for example) mostly an introvert who has great perseverance, a medium amount of confidence, laid back, semi-attentive, ect.... person. This is just an example, your results can be different. You finally see your actual personality on paper. So psychologists have used statistics in a range of ways. One that interested me is that employers can higher top notch employees using a scientific, valid method that trumps old fashion interviews. NOTE: Interviews have been known to be not predictive of job performance. So, you need 10 employees? Talk to an industrial/organizational psychologist and hell get you the best of the best. Isnt this amazing? This is the realm of psychologists. The world thinks of a psychologist as a counselor but there are over 20 branches of psychology. One other really cool branch is the psychologists who specialize in artificial intelligence.
