STEP # 1 Introduction to our on Face Book : PHILIPPIANS BIBLE STUDY By Pastor; Jay McLaughlin To begin our in-depth (meaning taking every word and phrase apart to get its deepest meaning) study in the book of Philippians, we will need to first get an understanding about “Objectives and Flexibility.” We will need to understand, these can, and should be, allowed to be applied all the way through any study you have in Gods word, to glean and grow the most for your hard efforts, and be found more pleasing to our God, and more useful in His Kingdom. The reason for this, is to get us to understand that all our studies through Gods word should have the same common goals, but mainly our personal growth, from which all other Godly desires work through. 1. First is our Objective list: A. A firm foundation and understanding, with a desire to return to the study regularly. B. To teach us by example how to study scripture. C. To give you Historical backgrounds, definitions, explanations that you need, leaving the bible the only other reference you will need. D. To help grasp the message as a whole. E. Letting God’s word transform you into His image. F. I’ve set no time limits, the study must be flexible and objective. 2. Secondly is our Flexibility list: A. I will Adjust the study to meet the desired need of the whole group, done by your returned input. B. We’ll have optional questions to enhance the study level. C. We’ll use cross-references to spark thought and discussion. D. We’ll use questions that delve deeper into the passage. E. You may want to use an outline if it will help you better get to a better understanding. 3. Overview and Details: A.Read all overviews (Commentary presented) as they are a key to understanding the context. B.Suggestion of what you should ask yourself? 1. Why did the leader, through God, prepare this book? 2. What is it they want to accomplish? 3. Simply what is the book about? 4.When all our studies are finished, try to review the study. 4. Kinds of Questions. A. All bible studies follow a three step progression” 1. First you observe: A. What does the passage say? 2. Secondly you interpret: A. What does the passage mean? 3. Lastly you apply: A. How can, and does this truth effect my life? B. Other questions to ask yourself while studding. 1. Ask yourself, many how and why questions? 2. Is this study just for knowledge, self application, or both? 3. Am I staying in dialogue with God in the study? Does it relate to other scriptures. 4. What does God you want me to actually see? 5. Father, why is this true? 6. Lord, how does this apply to my life? C. Write down your answers and thoughts, and meditate on them. 1. It helps to clarify the answer, or question. 2. Meditating helps clarify the facts, and allows conviction to sink in. 3. This truly helps you act upon them for your life. 4. Find some quite time and review, meditate, and pray often. 5. Study aids: A. The Life Change series is where much of this study can be found. But any good commentary on the book of Philippians will be fine. 6. Scripture versions: A. Our study is mainly from the NIV, but any top of the mark interpretation should be fine to use, Like NKJV, NAS, RSV, even the old KJV. The choice is yours. 7. Memorizing and meditating: A. Memorizing any verse enhances it’s ability to change the things God wants changed in our lives. B. We all seem to forget quickly what we just read, yet, we remember what we ponder over, and over, and over. 8. Group study: A. Both new and mature believers can always benefit from any bible study, and should gain needed strength as they apply it to themselves. B. All studies can be split away from the original so as to discuss them much more deeply. C. I, as the leader will add or subtract questions as I see that it is needed. D. All questions should be answered by you, and then related back to the study at hand to help prevent error, and increase growth. E. I will keep the end of every study open for any question that someone might have that needs to be explained deeper, and made much more clear for a clearer understanding. I will also use the input from others involved if it helps our study and our growth. We will be going through the Historical Background first: Then give you a Clear Overview; then on to the actual study in Philippians, that are divided into separate meaningful sections that will help make it easier for us to follow and understand, and to prevent it from becoming burdensome to anyone. Helpful Suggestions: 1. Write down any questions or suggestions you might have, then share them with me as you feel necessary. 2. Try hard to keep up with the study material from week to week, pray often, meditate, and pray for one another. 3. Remember, Satan does not want us to grow, so be prepared to battle and to grow more into Christ likeness and maturity, as I believe it is worthy of all our efforts. ***This is the introductory into our Philippians bible study, so please set time aside for it, and grow and share. I also may have to vary my time on line with the study as I am still having to see out of town doctors for healing from a past accident, so please bare with me if I don’t answer right back at times. But I promise I will get back to you within a day or so. Your following of this study can and will cause growth in your walk and relationship with others. I am doing this same study with some couples, and all are growing and changing like never before. Philippians is a very powerful book, that is over looked in believers study of scripture, and shouldn’t be, as it is loaded with how to be the servant God wants us to be at home, in the community, and in the church. I look forward to hearing and interacting with you in the days ahead. God bless, and may all your efforts glorify Him, as He is worthy to be praised. Amen.
