SUICIDE PREVENTION:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The need of the hour is quality care services based at community level through private- public participation to offer mental health services comprising of early identification, adequate medication and long term psychotherapy and continued follow up by Neuro-Psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychiatric social workers and psychiatric nurses. Patients are very reluctant to visit psychiatrist because of stigma, shame, guilt, fear & misconceptions, various cultural myths and wrong notions that prevents family members to access timely expert help at Govt. Sector. Prevention and control takes long term efforts and duration and targeted at changing the behavior of society in general. Right now we have a generation of people who are already vulnerable to develop DEPRESSION, SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS, MENTAL ILLNESSES and HAVE PERSONALITY issues such as HIGH IMPULSIVITY, LACK OF COPING RESOURCES & SKILLS, lack of positive life-skills techniques to overcome minor setbacks and failures. For each completed suicide ( successful suicide), there are 4 suicide at-tempters ( suicide failure), hence the best way to prevent and control suicide at this moment is provision of specialized, high quality mental health services to person at high risk of committing suicide in the future. Maybe these services needs to be provided through other sectors/ institutions rather than hospitals where family members can bring their mentally ill patients without any anxiety, fear and shame so that they will not be stigmatized, branded or leveled as PAGLA, MENTAL or PSYCHO.
