SUNDAY CORNER: On a day like this we begin with appreciating the goodness of God upon us for His kindness upon us. As humans we cannot thank God enough for what we are especially looking at events around us. Personally, I am full of joy for His grace upon me. In the last few weeks I was away to the United States for series of conferences which involved a lot of shuttling across one of the largest countries in terms of land mass. I was nominated along fourteen other prominent Nigerians for the trip. The engagement was indeed fruitful as it avails me apportunity to aquire experience of practical global politics and its system. We meet new friends and established new relationship. It was to me not only a rear but also a golden apportunity. However, I want to share an encounter we had with a taxi driver in far away Histon in the United States. We boarded a taxi and the driver on realising our accents coupled with our complexion asked, are you from Nigeria? For the fear of Ebola stigma we immediately altered a our accents and answered, no we are from London. At this point the taxi driver opened a discussion about Nigeria. He said, there is a country called Nigeria in Africa and that the capital city of it is Lagos. He continued, in that country we understood that it is the President that is killing his own people. We were shocked to borne marrow level and couldnt continue but not betray our earlier position we continued with the discussion until we disembarked at our destination. What is of concern for me here is the status of our image as a nation. Our unwillingness to get our focus correctly is portraying us in bad light. How can we explain the escalating state of insecurity with attendant destruction of lives and properties. How can we believe that we are on top of the situation while so many cities and towns have fallen into the hands of insurgents. Can we now conclude that the huge security budget is looted as usual to enable terrorism flourish unabated? Or better still is security now an enterprise where gold diggers exploits at the expense of the blood of innocent Nigerians? I think the situation is beyond rational comprehension and cannot be defended at any level. For those who believed the religious theory of insurgency, I referred them to the report of the Hostage negotiation expert, an Australian clergy, Stevens Davis, which in my opinion corroborated the assertion of this Histon based taxi driver. We cannot cover up this matter any longer, our government must purge itself of all these damaging evaluations. To me, the political will power is not there and its unfortunate. God bless Nigeria and Happy Sunday.
