SUPREMACY OF CRICKET There is another aspect of the sport of cricket. In regard to the misuse of time also, it is the most useless sport; because it continues for several hours and several days together. It has no definite time-frame. It leads to a great financial loss to our poor country. How? Let us see: The government servants of our country get 12 months’ salary for 6 months work (that also if they work sincerely) because they have a total holidays (including all leaves, Saturdays, Sundays, summer vacation or winter vacation, puja holidays, etc. ) of more than 6 months a year. In such a situation, when there happens to be a cricket season, most of these employees remain absent from duty without any leave just to watch cricket on TVs at their homes causing a great loss and harassment to the public. A few sincere employees who go to their offices begin to view the match on TVs provided by their employer institutes. In the offices where there is no TV facility the employers keep with them a radio or transistor set and listen to the matches causing inconvenience to the public at large. When a daring public asks them for work their reply is:come tomorrow” and this tomorrow never comes till the cricket season is over. Hence it is clear that our national and state exchequers are at a great loss due to this cricket menace. Even our Ministry for Information and Broadcasting has a feudal policy in the matters relating to cricket. This is evident from the fact that even while India is not playing, the live telecast of cricket matches continues in the Doordarshan. On the other hand, in other sports even when India is playing in the finals it is not telecasted live in the Doordarshan. This is an injustice to other sports and games. Doordarshan and AIR are not the paternal properties of cricket alone. Our government that boasts of socialism should know this fact. The government should encourage all sports and games equally, and highlights of all the sports should be telecasted in the Doordarshan. Just like when there is an election, the DD and AIR allot time equally for all political parties for campaigning; all sports should get an allotted time for their highlights. There should be a division of time among all types of sports and games. The supremacy of cricket is against the norms of democracy. Last but not the least it would be suffice to say that our National Game is Hockey and not Cricket. Then why this official patronage to cricket only?
