SUPREME COURT LAYS DOWN GUIDELINES TO CHECK ACID ATTACK ON GIRLS The Supreme Court laid down the stringent guidelines to regulate the sale and availability of acid to check increasing episodes of acid attack on girls. The court fixed a minimum compensation of Rs 3 lakh for the acid attack victims and that the state will have to pay Rs 1 lakh to the victim within 15 days. The buyer of acid shall have to produce photo ID proof, proof of residential address and the purpose for which the acid is required. For bulk purchase of acid, the prior permission of the area sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) is a must. Even educational institutions shall have to seek permission of the SDM. The state shall bear the expenses of medical treatment of the victim and rehabilitation. Only authorised shopkeepers shall sell acid as per the guidelines laid down by the apex court and the shopkeeper found violating the guidelines shall have to pay a minimum fine of Rs 50,000.
