Sabbath Message: Theme: Confidentiality in Christian Marriage Text: Mark 10.8. And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh The purpose of this message is to consider confidentiality - Openness/secrecy in Christian marriage bearing in mind Gods instruction that the two of them shall be one. We want to see whether this oneness should be absolute or relative given two major examples from the scriptures. Today, we shall consider Abraham as a case study. Gen 22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. Gen 22:2 And God said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. Facts emerging from these two verses: 1. God saw Abraham and Sarah as a couple. Here he did not bring the temptation on the two, rather his focus was on Abraham (God tempted Abraham). 2. God did not ask him to discuss it with Sarah to carry out the task. Abraham did not either discuss it with her. On issues relating to divine messages, the husband or the wife may at times constitute a hindrance to obeying Gods instruction more so when the task involved is not so palatable. If Abraham had made it known to Sarah, I doubt it if Sarah could have consented. Imagine yourself a minister of God with little income and only one vehicle and God reveals himself to you with the instruction to dash out your vehicle to a neighbour around. The first thought that would grip your heart is, how will madam react to this message? 3. The fact that Abraham acted or reacted over the message alone did not break the bond between them as one flesh. The temptation was great for Abraham himself for he had only one son at an old age (a beloved son indeed). He was to go about two days journey to carry out the sacrifice. Those two days are not just as ordinary days for him but crises days, yet with determined heart, he was willing to be obedient. These are qualities God desires from us as Christians. Jesus Christ went through such crises period in the garden of Gestemane. He cried to his father asking whether the cross could pass over him. From the above we saw that Abraham the Father of faith, though in one heart with Sarah, he did not share the Message with her. Of course Sarah would hear that when he returned from the Mt Moriah where he was to carry out the sacrifice. This shows that confidentiality on the part of Abraham was partial as regards obeying divine instruction yet maintaining the oneness God desires in marriage. Next week, we would also see a wife who did not share her reaction to an issue with the husband and thus saved the entire family while maintaining oneness In her marriage. Till next week. I encourage you to find a suitable church of God where the truth of Christ is preached with little or no perversion and worship with them. This is good for your spiritual development.
