Sabbath as a day or an attitude? Now, may I encourage you and any who are interested to do a study of the Sabbath in Scripture. So many want to equate the 7th day of creation with the Sabbath which are not the same. The first place Sabbath is mentioned is Exodus 16:23 and is used 14 times in Exodus to establish the Sabbath teaching as part of the MOSAIC COVENANT, the Law. They cannot be separated (Sabbath and the Law). The previous 2500 years, no Sabbath was kept by the fathers. ALL aspects of the Law were fulfilled in Jesus and His life, crucifixion and resurrection. In the flesh, as a Jew, he fulfilled not only the legal aspects of the Law but the divine intent of the Law (IMPOSSIBLE for all others), John 8:29. The purpose of the Law was to bring idolatrous rebellious Israel into obedience (Exodus 13:17;18; 1 Tim. 1:5-11). Israel rejected the priesthood of all believers at Sinai (Exodus 6:2-8; 19:4-6; 20:18-20: 32:1-4; 1 Peter 2:9,10). Abraham walked in a covenant of faith and promise which the Law given 430 years later did not nullify. nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus ... I do not nullify the grace of God; of if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly. Gal.2:16, 21 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses... continue in the grace of God. Acts 13:26-43 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are NOT UNDER THE LAW, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we ARE NOT UNDER A LAW but under grace: God forbid.... you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness. Rom. 6:10-23. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are NOT UNDER THE LAW. Galatians 5:13-25. Tell me, you who want to be UNDER THE LAW, do you not listen to the Law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman ... the free woman through the promise ...these are two covenants, one from Mt. Sinai ... she is Hagar ... but the Jerusalem above is free, she is our mother ... and you brethren like Isaac, are children of promise. Galatians 4:21-31 The Law deals with the flesh, faith perfects the spirit of man as he walks in obedience. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Hebrews 11:6. Obedience is a response of faith from the heart. Obedience to law is subjugation of the flesh to ritual but cannot cleanse the heart. Colossians 2:16-23. Galatians 3:1-14. The Law is our schoolmaster to lead us to Christ out of the bondage of sin and the Law and unto perfection in Christ. Galatians 4:1-7; Acts 15:10,11. These are only a few and are not meant to be comprehensive. As you can tell this is an extensive study requiring study, meditation and praying to understand the will and purpose of God. As Moses said: teach me your ways, that I may know You. The whole OT and NT are given to us to walk in obedience by faith as the Holy Spirit leads. All of it is needed and every teachings reveals Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Savior of the world. Remember the same God who delivered 605,550 men over 20 years of age, out of Egypt - buried 603,548 in the wilderness because of their UNBELIEF, failing to walk by faith. Hebrews 3:12-4:16.
