Women who went shopping and left puppy in car were allowed to reclaim him July 3, 2014 Penny Eims Dog News Examiner According to Thursdays publication of the Times-Picayune, two women who went shopping at a mall in Slidell, La., and left a puppy locked inside of a hot vehicle, have been allowed to take the puppy home. Last Sunday, a Slidell police officer broke into a vehicle which was parked outside of the North Shore Square Mall and rescued a pit bull puppy which was near death. The vehicle had windows which were barely cracked, on a day when the outdoor temperature was in the 90s - the minimal amount that the windows were opened did little, if anything, to alleviate the extreme temperature inside of the car. Shortly after the pup was rescued, Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith told WNEM: There is no doubt that the puppy would have died if our officer wouldnt have intervened, After the pup was rescued, 23-year-old Lajessica McKenzie and 20-year-old Carleisha Shelly were booked on a charge of simple cruelty to animals - however, despite the charge, the local animal control agency confirmed that the women were allowed to reclaim the puppy. First time offenders of the misdemeanor charged are allowed, by state law, to regain custody of their pet. Officer Delvan Melancon is the man who was responsible for saving the distressed puppy from the vehicle last weekend. After the pups rescue, Officer Melancon told WGNO News that if necessary, the pup would have had a home with him; he had stated: “I’m glad to hear it’s going to be alright. If it’s still at the pound I’ll go pick it up myself,”
