People say, what have you been doing? and I could never tell them. I never sit idle. Id love to have a boring life. You have to supplicate yourself in a way, she explains of the process, and let go of your ego because if youre conscious of what youre giving out and conscious of what youre choosing to expose and hide … then it holds you back from doing something that will stir you and … maybe stir somebody else. Were doing our own thing, she explains. Ive probably said the same thing Ive said before, which is that I always respect the nerds and people who are a bit nerdy because theyre just being themselves. Theyre not sort of wearing the safety pins because the boy next door has the safety pin chain. Theyre doing their own thing and theyre the real punks. I always thought, Well, were doing our own thing. Thats way more punk than being a punk. What came out of St Martins was I met Sophie, she says. We know each other well. Were like rock climbers. Weve got each others ropes but its not good enough just to like or love somebody. You have to actually be able to trust them and we trust each other. We work well together. Baz Halpin, who did the actual, physical, technical, light stuff helped us [realise] it, Adu says. He did a visual model. The visual show has got to be in your head but the [concert] is way more about feeling. Thats what the songs are about. They represent the sensations within people. I feel musical right now, she says. I feel thats a good way to express myself but I also think I really need to get back to my life. Ive got a daughter and its hard to be an artist and a parent, a decent parent. I think Im going to take that road.
