Safety is a hackneyed phrase being bandied around. We know its important, there are posters communicating safety, our job appraisals are also tied to safety. But there is a tacit agreement in the workplace which ensures safety always plays second fiddle to money. I have seen safety officers leave, disillusioned about the safety culture in their companies. I still remember the oxymoronic response from my manager when I raised the issue of unsafe practices: Well, you can hurry up slowly. and the various acrimonious arguments I have with my colleagues who are too frightened about standing up to management on safety issues. The eagerness for results and profits often overshadow safety. Insignificant cases get shelved, lessons learnt are forgotten. All these so called inconsequential, itty-bitty stuff get consigned to oblivion until one day it reaches a tipping point. forbes/sites/lisaearlemcleod/2014/08/05/why-the-gm-dont-blame-me-problem-really-happened/
