Saint John, New Brunswick eventually became Canadas first city - TopicsExpress

Saint John, New Brunswick eventually became Canadas first city because of the thousands of Loyalists emigrating from the United States following the revolution, which ended in 1783. Many of these refugees settled at the mouth of the Saint John River, building their new home. In 1877 much of the centre of the city was destroyed in a catastrophic fire. Within a short period of time rebuilding began and was completed, in the style of European architecture, with much of the funding coming from England and Boston. Following the switch from wooden to iron then steel ships at the end of the 19th Century, Saint John entered a period of dormancy. One positive result is that a lot of the unique architecture remains in the core of the city. A few years ago, on one of many trips to the area, I was taking pictures of these buildings and ran across a group of young descendants in the Loyalist Burial Grounds. I took the photos, made a slideshow and added music from Brent Mason, a New Brunswick artist. The song, Refugees, explains what happened when the Loyalists arrived on the shores carrying broken trunk. The slideshow, while not great, does show some of the grittier side of Saint John. It is on YouTube and if you click on the link it is best when watched Full screen in HD (720p works fine). Just click on Pause and change the settings. Some of the images are sequenced to the lyrics. Hope this works! https://youtube/watch?v=tDCrtRkWQsM
