Saint for the Day October 27th. Bl. Antonia of Brescia. (1407-1507) Antonia Gainaci entered the convent of St.Catherine at Brescia, her native town, at a very early age; fear of hell, her biographer notes, made her decide to become a Dominican. But during her noviciate she showed her resolution to suffer all in order to persevere in her vocation. In 1447 she found herself charged with the reform of the Dominican convent of St. Catherine at Ferrara. She set about this so wisely that she was elected prioress. She was, however, deposed and compelled to go back to the lowest rank, until the day when all the sisters again found themselves unanimous in asking the Vicar-General to give her back to them. It is believed that she remained there until her death, and it is known that she died in her hundredth year. Quote for Today. ‘Death destroys a man but the idea of death saves him.’ (Forster)
