Salem News : Arch:0020 Sources : The Hindu ‘Parliament should discuss implementation of Vision 2020’ mall children are helpless when it comes to stopping natural resources from being plundered in the name of industrialisation. But they want to be a healer and not a killer of earth and hence, to express their solidarity and to save nature they vowed to plant saplings and say no to plastics. A 19-minute skit by students with a vision, mission and message welcomed the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to ignite the minds at Montfort Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Yercaud here on Thursday. Escorted by the majestic school band, Mr. Kalam interacted with a few students before speaking on ‘Great Thinking Leads to Great Action’. He said that a new India is possible in seven years and wanted Parliament to discuss the implementation of Vision 2020. “Though economy is in turbulence now, it is temporary,” he added. He said that achieving the goal will help in removing the imbalance between rural and urban, equal growth in agriculture and industries, healthcare facilities to all and pave way for a corruption-free government. He said that great buildings and facilities in schools does not ensure quality education as the task of igniting the minds of the students rest with the teachers. “They have to lift the average student to excellent category,” he said and added that teachers’ conduct, both inside and outside the school, should be an example for all. Recalling the challenges faced by scientists in their childhood days, the former President called upon youth to plant saplings and be a transformer in saving the earth. “Dreaming small is a crime,” he said and called upon the 60 crore youth to unleash their powers. K.J. George, Provincial Superior of Yercaud Province, K.J. Varghese, Principal of the school, Ignatius, Director of the school, teachers, students and parents participated. During an interactive session with students of Paavai Institutions, Pachal in Namakkal, he said that he wrote about India becoming a super power in his book ‘India Vision 2020’, when India’s Gross Domestic Product was about 8 to 9 per cent. “This has now come down to 5 per cent. This has to be increased for the vision to come true. Agriculture and rural industries should improve for Vision 2020 to come true,” he added. Stressing on the need to strengthen rural economy, the backbone of the country, he said that this would not be possible without improving agriculture. “Agriculture sector should come out with value-added products and increase export share of such quality products, as it would play a key role in improving India’s economy,” Mr. Kalam said and expressed the need for small-scale industries to improve. A scientist himself, he urged students and faculties to focus on research. He asked students to put in hard work and strive hard to improve their knowledge. He recalled that great scientists and inventors are remembered for their individuality and hard work. Later, he addressed students of PGP Education Institutions at Paramathi and interacted with them.
