Saltwater Reports Here is our 06SEPT13 update on the saltwater scene. Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association News by Dr. Ken Neill III(PSWSFA) Puppy drum action remains good in the shallows. Floating peeler crab under a cork has been the most productive method. Some speckled trout are being caught also. The speckled trout bite will improve as move later into September. This will be perfect timing for the “Battle on the Flats” speckled trout and puppy drum fishing tournament on September 28. This event will be held out of Dare Marina. Back River, Poquoson Flats, Goodwin Island, and the Mobjack Bay area are all producing nice catches of puppy drum along with speckled trout and small striped bass.. Big red drum are being caught along the seaside of the Eastern Shore. Schools of big drum are also being encountered in the lower bay by anglers looking for cobia. September is a good month to catch some big, fat reds at the CBBT, especially at the 2nd and 3rd islands. Cobia action will wind down this month but it is still very good right now. Check the buoys leading out of the bay and the pilings of CBBT for these fish as they prepare for their fall migration out of our area. Some nice flounder catches are being made at the CBBT and along the Baltimore Channel. Overall, it has not been a great flounder year but the bite is pretty good right now and should remain good through September. This is also a good month for big sheepshead at the CBBT and over some of the other bay structures. Spadefish are still being caught at the CBBT and over some of the coastal wrecks. Spanish mackerel are plentiful over and around the coastal wrecks, along the oceanfront and there are still being caught up in the bay. Triggerfish have been a good catch at the CBBT and over numerous wrecks like the Santore, Tiger, and the structures at the Tower Reef. Spot have been numerous all summer with some decent-sized fish around. Hopefully this will lead to one of our better September spot runs this year. The past couple of years have been disappointing but it is looking promising. Offshore, the white marlin bite is pretty epic. There are good numbers of blue marlin around. Some bigeye tuna continue to be encountered. Dolphin fishing is pretty good. There is an abundance of mako sharks out there right now. Yellowfin tuna are showing up some. Wahoo have been numerous and that bite will just get better. It is a good time to be fishing offshore. York River Charters - (757)645-8397: No report Port Messick Marina, Fishing News from Bob Moses (757-218-7144): Anglers working the area around Back River and the Western shoreline of the Bay report catches of keeper puppy drum, keeper speckled trout and keeper flounder.
