Same in Italy -- those strangely-always-almost-stale rolls and a few sweets and coffee. I am willing to partake of other countries concepts of breakfast....to a point. After several weeks in Italy I told a bald-faced lie at the pensione on the Giudecca in Venice and (crossing my fingers under the tablecloth) said that I was diabetic, and begged for an egg with my cold fare. They were not hostile and did bring me a scrambled egg that I almost fell into, I was so in need of protein that morning.
