Samuel D. Byrd, Sr. Homestead, Poyen, AR, ca. 1848. According to the National Register of Historic Places, Samuel moved to Grant County from Pickwick Landing, Hardin County, Tennessee around 1846. He moved here with his sister and brothers. During the Civil War one brother, Lawrence, was hung by jayhawkers because he would not give them money. In 1850 he married Tabitha Jane Reed, also from TN. He was 36 and she was 16. They would eventually have seven children and the house was added onto so they could accommodate the growing family. The left side was built first in 1848 by Samuel as a log cabin. The right side and dogtrot was added in 1850, the year they were married. I was built of rough-out batten pine planks. In 1896 two rooms were added at the back of the right side - a bedroom and a kitchen. A shed room added to the back of the left side and was the meal room for the storage of flour, corn meal, lard, etc. The left side of the porch was enclosed in 1930 to create another bedroom. The home is still owned by the descendants.
