Sandy’s Pic for Today! “I am finding that not all relationships should be fixed. Accepting that not every relationship should or can be repaired is very difficult for me and more difficult depending upon the degree of my connection to the person. I may realize that the situation is not healthy for me but I struggle with letting go regardless. I find that I am the kind of person who never likes someone being upset with me, hurting someone, or walking away from a relationship that I have not given 110% to salvage. I like to see the best in everyone and have often been hurt over and over trying to maintain the relationship, which can often be one-sided. With my awareness, I am learning to look at each relationship and see what draws me to them. What draws me to them is what I need to bring out in myself. What I am finding is that some of the things I get are personal reassurances that I am okay just the way I am, I am loved, or I am strong enough to accomplish anything. These all boil down to feeling worthy and accepted. Recognizing the reason I hang on is easy, finding them in myself is the difficult part. We often return to these relationships because it is easier to rely on someone else to provide our happiness even if it is temporary. The inability to walk away causes self loathing. Either situation is painful, but we must choose the one that is most beneficial for our future happiness and lasts a lifetime. For me, I know that I will hang on long enough to find those qualities in myself and then I will be able to let go. I will believe in myself and will not need acceptance or reassurances from anyone other than myself. Learning to love myself continues to be the goal for me in this class.
