Saturday, January 03, 2015. Upanishads : Kenopanishad : Chapter-4 : Mantram-8. Discussion-8. AUSTERITY .... DAMA- ( RESTRAINT ) .... If austerity, means a physical denial of the Indriya-s coming into contact with their object, with low animal-appetites and delusive hopes of getting thereby some passing joy. Dama ( Restraint ) means controlling and choking, at its very source, the annihilating flood of desire-lava. Both being but forms of self - control, austerity is physical while restraint is psychological. In short, without a certain amount of Self-control, Self-perfection is impossible; it is as futile as the blind man yearning to have at least one look at his own son! When the physical and psychological personality in an aspirant is thus purified, ennobled and divines, then Sruti demands of him selfless dedicated work. If what you say be true, all of you may wonder what exactly is then the meaning of the Sruti-Vakyam, that karmam is one of the corner-stones of the Absolute Truth? Next : Discussion-9.
