Saudi Arabia: The Ministry of Labor has formed a team of recruitment company representatives to begin negotiations for domestic workers and activate the future role of recruitment companies, Hani Al-Afaleq, member of the National Committee for Recruitment Companies at the Saudi Chamber, said. Coordination has been arranged with the Ministry of Labour to stipulate the mechanism of the negotiation process, with Labour Ministries in various countries or recruitment agencies to find new forms of understanding and special contracts for domestic recruitment. The ministry has not released any other details about the nature of this team, its vision and its role in domestic recruitment. Al-Afaleq said the working team will establish a suitable mechanism for implementation, as well as writing contract forms and regulating the Saudi labor market. “The team will activate the role of recruitment companies; its activities will not be limited to writing contract forms and agreements. It will try to overcome any difficulties faced by companies,” he added. The team will focus its efforts on activating the role of recruitment companies in the domestic labor market. Saudis need more time to accept the idea of opening up new markets for labor recruitment, and focus will be limited to Asian markets like Nepal, he said. Al-Afaleq expects a breakthrough in recruiting domestic workers from the Philippines and Indonesia to occur within the next two months. He said there are positive results on this issue which are to be announced soon. “There is a mutual desire to overcome obstacles, which will contribute to filling the gap in domestic labor, especially after the temporary prohibition of Ethiopian labor and non-committed Sri Lankan labor,” he added. Recruitment companies haven’t begun importing domestic labor from the main markets due to such obstacles. Moving toward alternative labor markets needs more time because of the absence of regulations in some markets, especially markets that don’t have a large number of workers.
