Saw Kama perform this live in Montreal, required reading. #whitemaninauniformtrigggering TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNING: This piece deals with violence: gendered violence, racial violence, white cops killing black men. I lived through the past couple of weeks in denial: in an attempt to stay calm, to develop a thick skin, to not let myself be “that angry POC” yet again, I disengaged myself from news outlets and social media, I disengaged myself from any conversations that justifies racism and racial violence, and I also disengaged myself from the hurt and suffering of other POCs— those feelings I did not want to be feeling and thus, did not want to talk about. And then, last Friday, everything that I had been trying to repress came crashing down: emotional breakdowns that remind you that you are part of a legacy, that you are part of a history, where your body and your humanity is disposable, to be used, abused, killed— you live with the constant reminder that you are part of a lineage of exploitation and homicide, and that you are worth less, that your community is worth less, that your people are worth less… I wrote this piece, “Last Words,” as a way to grieve, as a way to deal, as a way to heal, as a way to remind myself that I am also part of a legacy of resilience and resistance. I wrote this piece in the afternoon and I presented it at ‘GENDER B(L)ENDER: l’open stage queer’, the same evening, immediately after it was written. It ends with Audre Lorde’s “Litany for Suvival.” xo - Kama Mrmt
